La La Land is a great story about dreams, love and artists – with Hollywood itself as a stage.
Is this the start of something wonderful
Or one more dream that I cannot make true
„City of Stars“ by Justin Hurwitz (Music) and Benj Pasek, Justin Paul (Lyrics)
You know this moment when you’re watching a movie or series that you just don’t want to end, and then, when it does, you instantly want to watch it all over again? That’s how I felt with La La Land, the new film from Damien Chazelle, director of the amazing Whiplash.
I can’t remember the last time I went to see a movie in the cinema and sat there smiling/crying/laughing and being fascinated for the entire time. Normally there are always moments where my attention gets drawn away. La La Land just doesn’t let that happen.
The musical drama tells the story about jazz lover and piano player Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and the struggling actress Mia (Emma Stone). Both of them are artists, living their lives in Hollywood, trying to fulfil their dreams: Sebastian plans to open his own jazz club and Mia goes from audition to audition to become a successful actress. At the same time, they are trying to fit into the monetary reality of music and film industry, where the unique and special doesn’t seem to count.
There is something really magical about these two characters meeting and falling in love with each other. The cinematography, colours, light, and camerawork all play their part in creating a special and deeply fascinating atmosphere. Apart from that, it’s not least the touching soundtrack, composed by Justin Hurwitz, that makes this movie an amazing experience.
It is not surprising that the song „City of Stars“ won in the category Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. Also, both Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling more than deserved winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance in a Musical or Comedy. They are acting, singing, dancing, tap-dancing like true professionals and Gosling even learned to play the piano within only a few months. All in all, the movie won 7 Awards, which is the most that any movie ever got at the Golden Globes.
La La Land is an incomparable experience. It left me happy, sad, speechless, all at the same time. In my opinion, Daniel Chazelle created something truly unique, which really needs to be watched by everyone.
